| Street Side Foods From India |
Indian cuisine is so well known and loved across the globe that it needs no introduction.
But you won’t have had a fuller taste of India, if you haven’t tried the street-side snacks or finger foods. It would be no exaggeration if said, that one of India’s culinary glories is its comforting street food which offers a myriad of flavours with almost every street corner lined with mobile food vendors (or shall we say restaurants-on-wheels) selling sumptuous snack delicacies. All visitors to India are greeted by an astonishing display of roadside snacks throughout the country. It is painfully hard to resist the smells and sights and tastes of this roadside food, prepared in front of customers’ eyes with the freshest ingredients and a good helping of showmanship. Here are few of popular street side dishes from india.. The class is part demonstration and part hands-on. Classs Starts with Introduction to spices

Menu I: Samosa (Popular triangle appetizer dish. Spicy potatoe filling pastries), Daal Wada (Lentil fritters), Pav-Bhaji (Like Vegetable SlopeyJoe), sweet brown chutney, green cilantro chutney.
Menu II: Papri Chaat (A mix of fried dough wafers or Sweet Corn with spices, chutney, potatoes and fried chickpea noodles) , Corn bhel, Alu tikki( Like potatoe cutlets with chutney and toppings) or Pav wada, and Indian chai tea.
Description of each as below: |
Samosas : Samosa’s are perhaps the most popular vegetarian (usually) Indian appetizer, street food, tiffin (light lunch) in not only India but throughout whole Indian subcontinent and its diaspora throughout the world. Quintessentially, it is similar to pastry with spicy boiled potato stuffing inside crispy flour dough served with spicy and sweet chutney. A popular non-vegetarian variant of this classic dish would have spicy ground meat |
| Dal Vadas (Lentil fritters): are also known as pakoras, bhajias or fritters. This is a spicy delicious snack crispy outside and soft inside. They are made with soaked lentils, flavoured with ginger, garlic & green chillie(spicy preference)and Cilantro(optional). Great accompaniment for rainy weather. |

| Pav Bhaji (Like vegetarian slopey Joe)
Bun bread (with a saucy vegetable paste) is a popular dish. It acquired the status of restaurant food but had humble beginnings as street food. It has retained its original roadside availability despite this. This can be eaten as lunch, dinner, or a snack, depending on how many pavs, or pieces of bun-bread, you can gobble up! The bun bread is grilled with butter, and eaten with a spicy blend of vegetables with onion and garlic in tomato gravy. Topped with cilantro leaves and onion. This is my favorite street side food (Heaalthy & filling). |

Papri Chaat or Corn Bhel (A mix of fried dough wafers or Sweet Corn with spices and chutney) AssemblingPapdi chaat |
| This is a street-side snack massively popular in northern India. The word ‘papri’ transliterates into ‘crispy fried dough wafers’ which is then smothered with ‘chaat’, meaning tangy as in ‘licking the chutney’. So, the dough wafers get covered with a sweet tamarind chutney and green Cilantro chutney and yoghurt and are garnished with a mix of Boiled potatoes, chickpeas, chopped onions, tomatoes, coriander leaves and sev (fried chickpea flour noodles). This adds crunch to the hearty chaat. |
| Corn Bhel, another delicious snack,is a crunchy spicy sweet chaat or salad, prepared with corn kernels, onions, tomatoes, coriander leaves, sev(crisp lentil based savoury),boiled chick peas, crushed roasted peanuts and drizzled with tamarind chuntey (dip)and green cilantro chutney, giving it a spicy, sweet and tangy flavour. Guilt free snack with no oil. |
Aloo Tikki:
Aloo Tikki or Potato Cutlets is one of the most popular snack dishes in India. Aloo Tikki comes under a collective group of snack items called ‘Chaat’ . In India, street vendors cook hot, spicy and yummy chaat on hot griddles fresh to order. The aroma of the spices invites all on goers whether they are hungry or not. The distinctive, tangible touch of flavor sensed with every spoonful makes one feel blissful. People stand in line and wait for their turn to be served; and when it arrives you have to see them finish it in no time. It’s an art. |
